"Southern Baptist Sissies" gave me flashbacks to how my friend was treated by our church, how he felt fear and shame, how he tried desperately to "be straight," and how he constantly battled depression and suicidal thoughts. I want those I love to be happy, however they find that happiness. Destroyed families, grim lives and the preaching of hate all culminating in a tragic suicide is not my idea of a comedy. I thought "Sordid Lives" hit close to home, being raised in the rural countryside of West Texas, but this well written play strikes to the heart of those from here, raised in the church, then growing up attempting to navigate self-acceptance and acceptance from God, without going mad in the process.
