From Ortolani's rockin synthesizer score, to Fred Williamson kicking ass, to strobe light fight sequences, to some terrifically gory practical special effects, to awful laser special effects, to some wonderfully corny miniature future cityscape sets, there was a definite so-bad-it's good quality to this film that I loved, but Fulci's direction of the motorcycle sidecar action sequences are pretty lacking in comparison to George Miller or even a hacky Italian contemporary like Enzo G. This movie centers around a televised death sport game show and features lasers, explosions, gore, hairstyles, cheap sets with blinking future-lights, eyeball damage, flimsy models, and, most importantly, Fred Williamson as Abdul. Raven is given limited access to torture the prisoners with electric shocks. It takes one hour and six minutes to actually get the gladiator action going and it wasn't entertaining. But the harrowing experience bonds the principle gladiators even more. This one is best reserved for the Fulci completist only but even those folks familiar with Fulci's work should still approach this one with vastly tempered expectations.Fulci's contribution to the Italo 80s sci-fi boom is yer average Italoschlock – it's no "2019: After the Fall of New York" or "Bronx Warriors," but anyone who digs this kinda shit will have a reasonably fun time.
