Burr was a courageous Patriot, brilliant lawyer and advocate for the working class.

Aaron Burr killed one of the nation’s most important founders, lost several key elections and is now often relegated to being a historical footnote.

He has become a parody and most historians ignore his important, nearly unique voice in the founding of our country. In fact this book does much to reinforce my long held opinion that Jefferson was our first sleazy president and that Hamilton and he are responsible for laying the slimy foundation of our present system of party politics.

I admit that prior to reading this book I didn't know much about this man other than what most others knew.

Got to be the best book on Burr, a much maligned founder who was an extraordinary man.

Burr does deserve a sympathetic biography and he got one here.

Further, Burr made huge mistakes in his life which tends to overshadow any good he did. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I just wanted to read a biography of the guy, but it’s cool.When I picked up this book the only thing I knew about Aaron Burr was that he killed Hamilton in a duel. Aside from this criticism the book was extremely informative which is always welcome to anyone interested in history.

In Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr, historian Nancy Isenberg attempts to clarify the man and his life, to provide perspective on oft-published prejudices, and to examine Burr's reputation in the important contextual light of politics. I watched the musical (thanks, Disney+).

(Especially since a lot of the sources are not published and can not be examined by the reader without seeking out the original archive.) Lots of names and trials and so forth. Burr's legacy seems lost in the propaganda-style celebrations of the other founding fathers, but this book brings his historical significance to the fore. But I only give the book two stars because I felt the author tried way too hard to justify Burr's decisions. The problem is that the author can’t really defend Burr, but she can’t condemn him either.

Now as a trial lawyer I will not deny that the author's advocacy is something to be admired and it would appear that her facts compellingly support her premise. “Revisionism” is usually a pejorative term – especially with regard to professional historical works – but the author should be commended for her transparency on this note.

But then, rancorous as our current political scene might be, it barely holds a candle to the extreme partyism of the era when political parties - in this case the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans - first appeared. I am bothered by the fact that she is the only one that has taken this position while everybody else seems to paint Burr in much darker hues. Instead what I read was a partisan advocacy for the restoration of the character of Aaron Burr.

Fascinating.

It covered his entire life and explained why he and Hamilton held a duel and why he shot Hamilton, something that would change the rest of his life.
