Give students approximately 30 minutes to build their elf traps. You’ve been waiting all year long, and now it’s finally Christmas Eve! Anyone, who would set traps of the kind mentioned in the book for Santa, is a brat. Another trap looks like a bomb hidden in a box of candy, and a complicated trap in a maze has an evil cowboy clown with a branding iron, leading to the elf’s cry, “Hey, you zapped my tushy!” The bomb trap and the branding iron seem to push the envelope of child-made inventions. This is not activity that should be celebrated.

After reading it, I was inspired to create a fun, thematic, procedural writing unit with the book as the jumping point.

It’s equally exasperating trying to communicate with Gong Gong in English, and by the time they join a card game in the park with Gong Gong’s friends, May is tired, hungry, and frustrated. I kept thinking I had skipped pages, but no...you’re just supposed to “get it”.



Students also receive the (included) parent letter on Monday to take home and begin working on their traps. It truly felt like these scenes were made up strictly to make the rhyme work (or kind of work). I even tried to convince myself that it was clever, but I just couldn't make the stretch. The spunky elf avoids a mechanical “elf snatcher,” hidden in a plate of cookies, as well as simple traps made of tinsel, double-sided tape, and a cardboard box concealing a mean-looking cat. There are way too many gaps in the plot, if there even is a plot. But although it seems like Gong Gong hasn’t been attentive so far, when May’s day finally comes to a head, it is clear that he has.

As the small elf tries to escape every trap kids set, it’s hard not to laugh and shake your head.Well the name of the book is How to Catch an Elf but there's no catching envoled. You've been waiting all year long, and now it's finally Christmas Eve! Many children have set traps to try to catch the elf that helps Santa deliver gifts to boys and girls around the world. This is a box that got wrapped with wrapping paper. I’m actually still not sure what the message of the book was after reading it to my 4 yr old. I have no words.

We want feel good stuff at this time of year.

I found out about this book since it was being promoted as an item teachers could order for their classroom, at my work.

This too-pat conclusion doesn’t quite hold up to logical analysis, as the full-size eggs and baskets are still too large for Penny and Peck to handle.

I thought it was going to be a great book, but it turned out to be just "meh." Even the face of the boy above the grocery store is full of spite. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon.
