But my investment career since the beginning was had at bottom-up equity houses, which invariably made my younger self a Warren Buffett-wannabe (like we haven't enough of them already) who abhorred trading material such as technical analysis or speculation like this one. It chronicles the life of one of the most legendary stock traders. I have read all of Jack Schwager's "Market Wizards" books and struggle to remember a single interviewee that did not mention, in a positive way, this timeless classic my Edwin Lefevre. One can learn and have fun. Only if I could give it more than 5 stars. His life is full of tragedy and redemption. First published in 1923, "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" is the most widely read, highly recommended investment book ever. An “absolutely-must-read-book” for any (aspiring) market professional.
Every other line would make so much sense to meJesse Lauriston Livermore. For example, we only learn that the narrator has a wife when someone tries to use her to hook him into a stock manipulation. This is a highly knowledgable book packed to the brim with historical information and tips and insights of the trade. Livermore started trading at the age of 15 and became known as the "Boy Plunger" because he was famous for taking huge short positions in the market, hoping to profit from price declines.
Reading this book, along with the actual writings of Livermore, it's easy to see how O'Neil was inspired by his work. "This book is a marvel. There can't be because speculation is as old as the hills. Generations of readers have found that it has more to teach them about markets and people than years of experience.
If you can get past the endless "I never do this, ..." blah blah, and the somewhat passe early 20th century patter, it is amazing to see how little has changed, and to get some insight into how large scale traders think. Whatever happens in the stock market to-day has happened before and will happen again.

I didn't come from a shiny university or have bankers as parents. Especially when they’re larger than life, and well-written.Jesse Lauriston Livermore. However, it was so dry that it felt more like reading a textbook that I was assigned. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. Informative, yes, but there was nothing to the book that kept the reader interested--save for those readers who perhaps already had an interest in the stock trade, etc. For a guy like myself.
Although the account is a bit fictionalized, it is written from the first person perspective of "Larry Livingston."
A timeless classic!
From the perspective of the real, professional traders, we are all sheep, you might as well play the slots as try to make money trading public markets. My takeaway is that Long value investors with a good cash position still have an edge even as small players, especially with today's limited liquidity
