A tale of three twentysomethings in New York in the 1930's managed to give this book a very "F.Scott Fitzgerald " vibe, but I just wasn't wooed enough to climb as high on the rating scale. In one he's clean shaven, wearing a custom shirt and a cashmere coat. Wanted to finish this book and denied myself a few hours of sleep.Loved the first half, and then it went downhill for me. All 51 characters in Rules of Civility are listed by chapter along with each character's description. It's a love letter, a limerick, a lollipop, a literary longing. I enjoy character-driven novels. Well, that debut novel was*ahem* interesting. What does he mean when he describes Katey as someone of “such poise and purpose”? This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a yearlong journey from a Wall Street secretarial pool toward the upper echelons of New York society and the executive suites of Condé Nast—rarefied environs where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve. Katey observes at one point that Agatha Christie “doles out her little surprises at the carefully calibrated pace of a nanny dispensing sweets to the children in her care.” Something similar could be said of how Katey doles out information about herself.
