"Blame" surges with insight about the sexuality of teenage girls: before they can even figure out what they like, they feel obligated to put on a show of it for the boys. This is the orb. With the perspective of adulthood, such battles seem silly, but in the thick of high school, it's life or death. story in a traditional Japanese school setting. Yet “Blame” is no thinly veiled piece of teensploitation. "Blame" uses the familiar scaffolding of other high school stories: social ostracism, peer pressure, absent adults, and yet it swirls with strangeness, both … Shephard’s performance has a radiant masochism — she’s a wallflower in bloom — and Chris Messina, with his thick-set handsomeness, mopes expressively.
Yet “Blame,” urgent but sketchy, never quite feels like a high-school version of “The Crucible.” It’s closer to being a Roger Corman knockoff of “Carrie” (I mean that as a semi-compliment).
Abigail, wouldn’t you know, already looks the part: She dresses in frocks buttoned to the neck, parts her wavy long hair down the middle, and is so morosely decorous in her speech that all that’s missing is “thee” and “thou.”The movie (mildly) parallels the witch hunt in “The Crucible,” with Abigail and Jeremy now cast as the guilty innocents at the center of a maelstrom. They don't even know they can opt out. Gone are the plaid skirts and white blouses. Quinn Shephard, 22 years old, plays Abigail, and not only directed the film but wrote the script while she was still in high school. His girlfriend thinks he's a loser and Abigail looks at him with devotion. Glass animals line the window sills.

There is a prequel, NOiSE, that takes place before things go the way they did and give more history. The movie was directed and co-written by its 22-year-old star, Quinn Shephard (who is best known for her role as Morgan Sanders on the CBS drama “Hostages”), and she has made a skilled and confident, if sometimes awkward, filmmaking debut that dares to portray a scandalous situation by taking the scandal out of it — or, rather, by projecting that scandal onto the characters around it.The connection between Abigail and Jeremy fuels the school gossip mill, and Melissa, the mean-girl ringleader, played by Nadia Alexander as a milky-skinned schemer with flame-red hair tips and a complicated scowl, tries to use it to destroy both of them, mostly because she’s jealous. Only Ellie seems to understand she gets to make her own rules.None of this is news, necessarily, but Shephard attacks the topic in creative ways, allowing for ambiguity, complexity, theatricality. Other than that, there are many surprises in store. Melissa is not a villain, Abigail is not a saint, but it's clear there's not enough room for the both of them. Even so its quite vague but its hinted that most population got trapped into the netsphere when a terrorist attack happened (with the death of their real life bodies) and after that a radical branch of the government took over and revoked access to everyone else (net genes or not). These scenes have a "stock" quality completely absent in the rest of the film. Quinn Shephard stars in, and directs, a sketchy but lively high-school drama that dares to place the audience on the side of a taboo romance.That’s a subversive thing for a movie to do. And that could easily bring about the charge that the movie is thoughtlessly condoning a terribly inappropriate relationship. The catalyst for her resentment is a dramatic showcase that features Jeremy’s students in selected scenes from Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” None of the other students wants to act opposite Abigail, so Jeremy becomes her stage partner, and the two rehearse a scene between the characters of John Proctor and — yes — Abigail Williams.
